Christmas Shopping: Toys : Robosapien V2

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Major design flaws
As I'm writing this I am looking at my V2 and thinking what a waste of money! When I first got it I was so excited and acting like a kid =) I thought it was so cool.
A week later I took it out of the box, spent 10 mins playing with it, threw away the packaging (which is massive!) and left it in the corner of my room. 1 month later I decide to have a quick play and disaster has struck!
Halfway through the initial self diagnostic it freezes and repeats "I think I have a bad motivator" and refuses to do anything else except repeat that statement! I checked the manual, there is no help section, I check the website there is no help section, I change the batteries and still no success.
I check online and to my horror discover that this fault is so common there are entire websites created about it! An internal gyro is prone to breaking, so many broke in fact that there was a massive recall in the US, but not here in Europe.
I contact WooWee the company that makes the robosapiens and I have still had no reply.

Save yourself some money and wait for the design flaws to be removed

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Defective Robosapien
Once I finally liberated him from the box and fitted the batteries he powered up first time and did his dance. After a short time he shut down saying his brain batteries were low. Another new set of Duracells produced about a minutes action and again he shutdown with low brain battery power. After a 3rd set of batteries and about another minutes use I packed him back in his box and set about returning him for a replacement. Hopefully a fully working one as it looks like it could be good fun if it works for a reasonable length of time.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic Toy
Robosapien V2 is a fantastic toy for anybody aged 4+ and is well worth the money.

Box: the box took the best part of half an hour to get in to due to the numerous ties and tape. We were forced to rip the box to get into it.

Walking: walking was intersting. he can walk slowly and on carpet as well as hard floors. he moves side to side alot so that he can move fowards (momentum necessary)

Movement: Smooth body movements are great nd many different positions are possible, very effective.

Demonstrations: Te demonstrations are very good, a dancing and a movement are the longest demos and i have to admit they are both brilliant.

Controls: The controls are easy to use providing that you have the manual, there are lots of different combinations and pressing the wrong one always does something unexpected.

battery life: battery life is good, i have used him for about 3 hours now and no problems yet, he also has a battery warning shout.

Gurad Mode: Guard mode is useful for intruders! Sirens are set off using his eyes and his hearing. He also records how many times he is disturbed.

In the space of an hour of playing these people liked it.

Aged 8,16,28,44,48,89 they all thought it was brilliant, except the cat... i caught it on guard mode.

Quite a contrast, and there is a huge number of moves and sounds.

He can bowl, throw, give, take, be surprised, refuse to turn off, he has a great personality.

I cant get him to detect colours except my skin colour but apart from that his eyes are brilliant, tracking items, asking for them. he blinks and sleeps.

after 2mins of being inactive he begins to talk and move random body parts.

overall,a brilliant toy definatly worth buying. exciting and always interestng, he wont be sitting in your cupboard.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A dissapointment
There are two purposes for Robosapien. Firstly it's a toy and a damn expensive one at that, particularly when you take into account the cost of batteries; however it does tend to keep my nephews amused for hours when they visit. It is also not that robust so must be handled with some care, not always the case when in the hands of excitable children. The visual sensors aren't that good in normal lighting, the sound sensors are next to useless, it doesn't like carpet and when bowling he's never managed to hit a skittle. Having said this he does have an amusement factor so as a toy I would give it three stars.

Secondly Robosapien can also be a electronic or PC hobbyists play thing as it is possible to program him but the manual is poorly written to aid you in this venture and it has significant programming limitations. More interesting is the ability to pull him apart and start re-programming him from the inside and add additional electronic accessories. This can be great fun but expensive if you happen to put your soldering iron in the wrong place. Once again there is a lack of good centralised information on his internal structure to help you get started. So as a hobbyist's dream I will give him 3.5 stars; 4 stars if there was more information available.

In conclusion Robasapien is a disappointment as he lacks the level of sophistication and artificial intelligence that may be implicitly inferred by some of the marketing hype.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fantastic !!!
This little guy affectionately nicknamed "Robbie" in our house has been played with almost constantly since we managed to extract him from the box (this was the most difficult toy to get out of the box I have ever come across!). This toy is definitely worth the money, and the batteries do last for quite a while........... mine have been in for over two weeks now and show no sign of running down, and he is used alot............ usually to scare me.
I read the other reviews and was nearly put off from purchasing him, but I think they were maybe expecting alot for their money, he does not walk that fast on carpet but he does walk faster on a hard floor. I would definitely but this again, and am thinking of the next model up!
Hope you find this review helpful.
